Fate Of American Hostages Uncertain Amid Ongoing Rescue Effort
As Israel considers its next move in an ongoing mission to eradicate Hamas following a deadly attack the terrorist group staged earlier this month, U.S. officials are reportedly ramping up efforts to rescue Americans being held hostage in Gaza.
Following the reported release of two individuals, many more U.S. citizens are believed to be in danger as Hamas militants keep the numbers and locations of their hostages hidden. Now, President Joe Biden is calling on Israel to postpone a possible ground invasion into Gaza as his administration attempts to locate and repatriate American hostages.
U.S. diplomats who spoke to the Washington Post cited “a fragile and anxious process” that has been fraught with roadblocks and fumbles along the way. As of the latest updates available, at least 10 Americans believed to have been taken hostage have not yet been located and could be among those killed in the region’s ongoing violence.
While Biden celebrated the release of Judith and Natalie Raanan, who were abducted by Hamas on Oct. 7, he emphasized the importance of rescuing the other Americans still being held by the militant organization and claimed his administration had been “working around-the-clock” to ensure their freedom.
“And we have not ceased our efforts to secure the release of those who are still being held,” he added. “I thank the government of Qatar and the government of Israel for their partnership in this work. Jill and I have been holding close in our hearts all the families of unaccounted for Americans. And, as I told those families when I spoke with them last week — we will not stop until we get their loved ones home. As president, I have no higher priority than the safety of Americans held hostage around the world.”
However, Bring Them Home Now, an organization created in support of the roughly 200 Israelis kidnapped by Hamas, criticized the Biden administration’s agreement to provide humanitarian aid in Gaza without securing the release of the hostages.
“We remind you that children, babies, women, soldiers, men and the elderly — some of whom have serious health issues, are wounded and shot — are being held underground like animals without any human conditions, and the government of Israel is treating the murderers to baklava and medicine,” the group asserted.
