House GOP Investigates State Department Funding Going Toward Censoring Conservatives
House Republicans are probing the State Department after news broke of funding for groups that attack prominent conservatives and free speech. The Foreign Affairs Committee sent a letter Tuesday to Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanding an explanation.
The committee members stated they are delaying approval of funding for the Global Engagement Center (GEC). The group, which falls under the State Department, is accused by many of targeting conservatives.
It was founded with a mission to fight global terrorism, but many believe that directive radically shifted. The letter noted that “The GEC’s founding mission, effectively, was to provide a ready source for the truth about America and our fight against global terror, particularly ISIS.”
Now the group stands accused of funding international agencies that seek to stifle conservative voices. This effort, of course, is cloaked under the mantle of combatting “disinformation.”
The lawmakers added that the GEC is currently far away from its original course charted by Congress. House Foreign Affairs GOP members are particularly concerned about funding from the subagency for the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), a foreign-based advocacy organization.
The group insidiously “created blacklists of U.S. domestic media voices to cripple U.S. citizen journalists’ advertising revenue.”
Besides its funding from the federal government, it also receives financial support from radical left wing billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Foundations. GDI offers clients a listing of media outlets — all conservative — that are a risk for spreading “disinformation.”
It routinely categorizes left wing sources as being the least likely disseminators of disinformation.
Interestingly, two nonprofits tied to the British GDI refused to provide clear details about their operations. Both the Disinformation Index Foundation and Disinformation Index Inc. would only release heavily redacted copies of 2021 IRS tax returns after a request by the Washington Examiner.
Reviewers noted the groups hid details about the officers, board members, and even sources of donations.
Out of the 69 news outlets studied by GDI, every one was right leaning.
Among conservative sources the government-funded GDI has smeared are the Washington Examiner, RealClear Politics, the Federalist, Newsmax, Breitbart News, the Daily Wire One America News, and the New York Post.
House Republicans are correct to be wary of this gross misuse of taxpayer dollars. And while the original mission of fighting global terrorist organizations such as ISIS was noble, censoring U.S. media organizations by targeting advertisers is very far away from that agenda.
