With just months before the November election, Republicans have voiced concerns over non-citizens being provided with voter registration forms across 49 states.

Reports indicate that welfare offices and various state agencies have been giving these forms to illegal aliens without verifying citizenship status. These forms often accompany applications for welfare benefits or driver’s licenses. Benefits are accessible to those with refugee status, asylum, or humanitarian parole. Following the 1993 National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), states must offer voter registration at places like the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and other agencies where people apply for benefits.

Despite laws prohibiting non-citizens from voting in federal elections or falsely claiming citizenship, no requirement exists to prove citizenship when registering to vote. As a result, applicants can claim to be American citizens and receive voter registration forms without any verification.

Arizona stands as the exception, prohibiting the distribution of voter registration forms to welfare applicants, but this restriction only applies to state elections, not federal ones.

In response, Republicans in Congress have introduced legislation to address this issue. The House Administration Committee recently approved the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which mandates proof of citizenship before voter registration.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who introduced the bill, stated, “While Biden and radical progressive Democrats give ISIS and criminals an app to literally schedule their illegal entry, Republicans must fight any chance of illegal voter registration until we can mass deport.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) emphasized the need for stricter measures, saying, “As President Biden has welcomed millions of illegal aliens through our borders, including sophisticated criminal syndicates and foreign adversaries, it is incumbent upon Congress to implement greater enforcement measures that secure the voter registration process and ensure only American citizens decide the outcome of American elections.”

Concerns about election integrity and voter fraud have intensified as the 2024 election approaches. The distrust stems from the 2020 election, where many believe COVID-era regulations, such as ballot-harvesting and drop-boxes, unfairly influenced the results in favor of Joe Biden.
