Lawmaker Reveals Mayorkas’ Apparent ‘Threat’ To Pro-Impeachment Republicans
President Joe Biden has received consistent backlash from Republicans — and increasingly from fellow Democrats — over the past three years due to his administration’s lax immigration policies and the record number of illegal border crossings that have occurred as a result.
When it comes to the official most directly accountable, however, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stands out and has been the target of multiple impeachment efforts.
The mounting pressure has apparently started to get to him, as evidenced by an anecdote U.S. Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) shared during a recent Fox News Channel appearance.
Referencing a private meeting between the cabinet secretary and House Republicans, she said that Mayorkas responded to a statement about his impending impeachment by declaring: “You’re not going to like who comes next.”
Fox News host Harris Faulkner was clearly taken aback by the revelation and Cammack went on to recall her reaction.
“I asked him if that was a threat, and he just smiled,” the Florida Republican said. “This man is dangerous. He knows exactly what he’s doing and he is two-faced. We need to get rid of him now.”
When Faulkner asked Cammack what she thought he intended to convey with his ominous remark, she reiterated that he “knows exactly what he’s doing,” and added: “This is 100% by design. They want an open border crisis, whether it is for an election, whether it is for future votes as they work to get rid of citizenship as a requirement for voting, we’re not sure.”
In any case, the lawmaker said that Mayorkas’ comment made an impression on her and others present for the meeting.
“But he was very, very clear in what he said, and there were other members in the room,” Cammack added. “So I will never forget that, and as we go to impeach him for his negligence, for him destroying our national security and eroding our national sovereignty, that will be top of mind.”
Although Mayorkas has attempted at times to defend his record, he affirmed last week that it “would not surprise [him] at all” to learn that as many as 70% of undocumented migrants are released after encounters with authorities. During a subsequent visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, he reportedly admitted to Border Patrol agents that the actual catch-and-release percentage is “above 85%.”
