Murdered Woman’s Mother Sues Biden Administration Over Border Inaction
The White House’s ongoing reluctance to enforce the nation’s immigration laws has resulted in widespread criticism from across the political aisle in recent years.
As the unchecked influx of undocumented migrants overwhelms the infrastructure in border states and communities across the country, some families have been impacted much more acutely by the crisis.
Tammy Nobles, for example, believes that her daughter’s death could have been prevented if the Biden administration had taken border security more seriously. In 2022, 20-year-old Kayla Hamilton was strangled to death in her Maryland home, allegedly by a roommate who was in the country illegally and was affiliated with the notorious MS-13 gang.
The victim’s mother is now suing two federal agencies — the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services — for $100 million. She recently appeared on NewsNation with her family’s attorney, Brian Claypool, to explain the motivation behind the lawsuit.
“Nobody at the border did their job and checked his background,” Nobles said of her daughter’s suspected killer.
Specifically, the lawsuit outlines various warning signs the family claims would have prevented the suspect from entering the country and being placed in the holding facility from which he subsequently escaped if federal authorities had been doing their jobs.
“He ends up in this trailer home as a roommate with lovely Kayla that was leased out by another illegal immigrant,” Claypool argued.
Nobles’ remarks came on the heels of her recent congressional testimony amid an ongoing impeachment inquiry focusing on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“For me, this is not a political issue, this is a safety issue for everyone living in the United States,” she told members of the House Homeland Security Committee on Thursday. I want everyone to know what’s going on at the border.”
The grieving mother concluded that “all they had to do was make one phone call to El Salvador to know that he was an MS-13 gang member on the list.”
“We’re bringing this lawsuit because we’re tired of being held hostage in our own country,” Claypool explained. “We’re tired of DHS playing Russian roulette with our lives.”
The suspect is expected to go to trial in June.
