Elon Musk has voiced strong support for a bill proposed by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) that aims to restrict voting in federal elections to American citizens only. Musk took to Twitter, now rebranded as X, to assert that those who oppose the bill are “TRAITORS.”

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, originally championed by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), was introduced by Johnson at a press event in Mar-a-Lago, Fla., earlier this year. Johnson shared a memo with the House GOP conference members ahead of the Fourth of July recess and continued promoting the bill on X on Friday.

“The SAVE Act will safeguard our elections by ensuring only American citizens vote in federal elections,” Johnson stated. He followed up with detailed posts explaining the bill’s provisions.

The proposed legislation requires state election officials to verify citizenship before distributing voter registration forms and necessitates proof of citizenship from applicants before they can register to vote in federal elections. It also gives the Department of Homeland Security the authority to initiate removal proceedings for noncitizens found to have registered to vote in federal elections.

Musk amplified Johnson’s message by retweeting his posts and stating, “Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS,” and questioned, “What is the penalty for traitors again?”

Fox Business reports that the penalty for treason includes death or a minimum of five years imprisonment, a fine of at least $10,000, and a permanent ban from holding office in the United States.
