During a speech delivered at the NRA’s Leadership Forum on Friday, former President Donald Trump cautioned Americans that Biden’s anti-gun agenda will create a government that goes after decent and law-abiding citizens.

“The Biden gun control agenda is part and parcel of the left-wing crusade to weaponize government against law-abiding citizens,” Trump warned.

The former president told the audience he was the “most pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment president” they have ever had and opined that tragic mass shootings seen around the country do not stem from a “gun problem” but rather one of socialization, culture, and spirituality.

“It is a scandal and a tragedy that year after year, Democrats in Washington continue to hold commonsense school safety measures hostage to their radical gun control agenda, which, in virtually all cases, would do nothing to prevent attacks by demented and disturbed individuals,” Trump proclaimed.

Trump pointed out that as new gun control measures from the Biden administration make it more difficult for law-abiding Americans to exercise their rights to keep and bear arms, many violent criminals who routinely ignore such policies have been permitted to roam the streets.

“[The Democrats are] letting criminals roam free, they’re all over the place. I’ve never seen anything like it. You’re afraid to walk through one of these Democrat cities, you go out for a loaf of bread and you end up getting shot.”

USA TODAY reported that Trump and other Republicans asserted their support of Second Amendment rights while being “[u]ndeterred by recent mass shootings.” It noted that the NRA event was held after recent mass shootings occurring at a Christian school in Nashville as well as a bank in Louisville.

The outlet did not make any mention of shootings in Chicago, Illinois, which have taken place every single month this year. A reported 10 people were shot last weekend alone.

A few supporters of the former president reportedly offered comments on his pro-Second Amendment remarks, with some expressing a view that Trump could be stronger on the gun issue. Particularly highlighted were the former president’s passed bump stock ban and his previous calls for raising the minimum age to acquire a firearm to 21.
