A new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has revealed that Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations received nearly $2 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars over a three-year span.

According to the Tuesday report, $1.89 billion in federal funding was allocated to several different pro-abortion organizations, including those that perform abortions, from 2019 to 2021. The overwhelming majority of the funds were given to abortion mill Planned Parenthood, which received a staggering $1.78 billion while terminating the lives of 1.11 million unborn children over the same three-year period.

This report was requested in January 2022 by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), who was joined in that request by 141 other Republican lawmakers. The Republican senator spoke to the Daily Wire about the report in an interview, where she argued that the staggering amount of funding should shock Americans even if they are pro-abortion.

“We regularly hear from people — whether they’re pro-choice or pro-abortion — they don’t think taxpayer dollars should be used for this,” Blackburn said in a Monday interview. “You’re looking at close to 600 million federal dollars that are going into abortion every single year.”

This shocking news comes as numerous polls have shown that Americans strongly oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, with a January 2023 Marist poll showing that three out of five Americans oppose using taxpayer dollars to pay for a woman’s abortion.

Beyond public sentiment, it is actually illegal to use taxpayer money to fund abortion, as the Hyde Amendment bars the use of federal funds for most abortions. However, the left has been able to circumvent this law by providing federal funding for pro-abortion organizations that is earmarked for other purposes. This still effectively funds abortion, as it frees up other funding for these organizations to use to terminate more unborn children.

Meanwhile, in addition to the $1.78 billion in taxpayer funds that went to Planned Parenthood, another $2.03 million in federal funding was sent to the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), which is an international organization that operates in 146 different countries and works alongside 150 member associations.

The GAO report also uncovered another $107.74 million in taxpayer funds that were sent to “four domestic regional organizations,” which remained unnamed and were identified only as “privately-owned providers of health related services within various regions of the United States.”

The report went on to explain that the groups “operated in a total of eight states during the time frame of this study” and that “the services they provide include… reproductive health-related service.”

The GAO also found that a significant sum of the money that Planned Parenthood received was “illegally” siphoned from the Paycheck Protection Program — the COVID-era program intended to aid small businesses in keeping people employed amid the pandemic.

“While small businesses struggled to make ends meet during the COVID-19 pandemic, Planned Parenthood illegally siphoned over $90 million in federal PPP funds. Congress intended for this PPP money to fund small businesses — NOT on-demand abortions,” Blackburn wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
