Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley recently rode off into the sunset, and it could not come soon enough for the embattled armed forces. The top U.S. general retired after a four-year term in his position that saw one crisis follow another.

Several “accomplishments” will be remembered from Milley’s tenure.

One is the remarkably embarrassing and chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan two years ago. The general gift wrapped billions in American military hardware for the Taliban, which wasted no time putting it to good use and subjugating the population once again.

Another is the sheer and shocking wokeness that permeated the armed forces during his tenure.

It is difficult to overestimate how far the military strayed from the proud history of fighting and defeating fascism and communism and protecting U.S. lives and interests.

Under Milley, service members were subjected to indoctrination on diversity, equity and inclusion. Drag shows on military installations became commonplace, and being prepared with the right pronouns replaced military readiness.

Then there was his tumultuous relationship with former President Donald Trump.

Before and after the Jan. 6 Capitol protest, Milley took it upon himself to speak to his Chinese counterparts. He said his purpose was to assure them that the U.S. was not threatened and that all was well.

In his two calls, he expressed concerns over Trump possibly sparking a war with Beijing. One call came four days before the 2020 presidential election and the other followed the Jan. 6 protests.

Milley also told Chinese Gen. Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army that if there were to be an attack, he would alert Beijing ahead of time. This is treason by any standard definition.

Anyone with a cursory knowledge of the Constitution knows that the president is also the commander-in-chief. There are clear and important reasons why the military answers to the nation’s civilian leader and not vice versa.

That would relegate the U.S. to banana republic status, something the Biden administration seems intent on accomplishing.

Is there any other U.S. president against whom these actions would be permissible? There should have been a public outcry and immediate investigations into the top general going behind his commander’s back to speak to leaders of the nation’s chief enemy.

President Joe Biden on Friday hailed Milley as a warrior. Perhaps he was, but not in the way the country had a right to expect. His actions brought shame and danger to the country, and his departure came not a moment too soon.
