X Gains Unlikely Source Of Ad Revenue: Democrat Politicians
After several major advertisers withdrew spending from X, formerly known as Twitter, for dubious reasons, the social media platform is now receiving advertising revenue from an unlikely source — Democrat politicians.
In recent weeks, several major companies have pulled their ads from X, including Disney, IBM and Apple. The reasoning behind these decisions is dubious at best, with many citing concerns over the platform’s content policies under owner Elon Musk — essentially complaining about his support for free speech. The initial advertiser backlash came amid overblown claims of antisemitism on the platform, despite widespread antisemitic content on other platforms such as TikTok or much worse content such as child exploitation on Instagram — neither of which have faced advertiser boycotts.
Musk was asked about these boycotts during a recent appearance at the New York Times DealBook summit, to which he told advertisers that were trying to “blackmail” him, “Go f—k yourself.”
All of this drew intense backlash from the left, which is why it is especially surprising that Democrat politicians are now becoming a major source of advertising revenue for X — even one of Musk’s harshest critics, disgraced Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
According to a report from the Washington Post, Democrat candidates and organizations have begun increasing their investments in political ads on X — spending over one million dollars for thousands of advertisements on the social media platform since Musk lifted X’s ban on political ads earlier this year.
The outlet noted that more than 50 Democrat campaigns and Democrat Party organizations across various levels of elections have flocked to X as a key platform to reach potential voters and donors.
Schiff alone has spent more than $90,000 on political ads on X. The Washington Post also reported that another one of Musk’s critics, Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-NY), has spent a significant sum of money advertising on the platform.
Conservatives on X have called out the Democrats for their hypocrisy over the ad spending, with David Sacks writing: “Well well well. The same Democrat politicians who have been loudest in denouncing the X platform and demanding that advertisers boycott it have been ‘splurging’ on ads that benefit them, according to WashPo. Always look at what these charlatans do, not what they say.”
