CNN Contributor: Supreme Court ‘Saved Joe Biden From Himself’
Although the rate of illegal immigration across the nation’s southern border has skyrocketed thus far in the Biden administration, one holdover policy from the Trump administration has prevented the crisis from becoming even worse.
A measure known as Title 42 allows undocumented immigrants to be removed from the United States for public health reasons, as deemed necessary following the outbreak of COVID-19.
The policy had been set to expire earlier this month, but the U.S. Supreme Court weighed in with a 5-4 decision allowing it to remain intact until a hearing in February.
CNN contributor Scott Jennings, who previously served as a senior adviser to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), touted the ruling and explained why he believes that the Biden administration will benefit from it despite “arguing to end” Title 42.
“The Supreme Court, at least temporarily, saved Joe Biden from himself,” Jennings declared, noting that the U.S. solicitor general “admitted that lifting Title 42 will lead to disruption and a temporary increase in unlawful border crossings.”
With a record number of migrants pouring across the border as it is, he concluded that the nation’s highest court did the White House “a favor.”
Of course, Jennings noted that the big winners were the GOP state attorneys general nationwide who pushed back against a federal district judge’s ruling that would have allowed Title 42 to expire last week.
He denounced the “dishonest statements after dishonest statements” that the White House has made in an attempt to downplay the severity of the border crisis.
“They’ve said the border is secure,” Jennings concluded. “That’s not true. The White House press secretary has said, ‘Oh, it’s not like they walk across.’ That’s not true.”
Customs and Border Patrol statistics show that agents encountered a staggering 2.3 million undocumented immigrants during the most recent fiscal year — and more than 230,000 each in the first two months of the current fiscal year, which significantly outpaces the 2022 average.
Even far-left Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently acknowledged that the current situation is unsustainable and that rescinding Title 42 would only make things worse.
“The fact is, what we’ve got right now is not working and is about to break in a post-42 world unless we take some responsibility and ownership,” he said.
