The Texas GOP and other conservatives are condemning an attempt by the Texas state legislature to impeach one of the most popular state attorney generals in the country, Ken Paxton.

The leader of this effort is the speaker of the Texas state legislature, Rep. Dade Phelan — who has been described by conservatives as a RINO, or “Republican In Name Only.” Phelan has sold out his own party on numerous occasion, including when he appointed more than a dozen Democrats to chair committees in the state legislature, despite Republicans having a supermajority.

In his latest move to side with the Democrats, Phelan is using unproven allegations of impropriety — including bribery allegations that voters were fully aware of before they reelected Paxton in 2022 — to try to impeach the attorney general. While Phelan appears to think the allegations will suffice to impeach Paxton, they were not enough for the Biden administration — as they have been unwilling to charge Paxton with any crime.

Human Events senior editor Jack Posobiec blasted Phelan and other “fake Republicans” for their actions in a post on Twitter.

“We are now seeing Dade Phelan and fake Republicans in TX sell out conservatives and attempt to overturn the will of the voters by removing duly-elected Ken Paxton from office. Vote the RINOs all out in March!” he wrote.

Phelan has also been condemned in the past by former President Trump, who called him “another Mitch McConnell” and blasted him for siding with Democrats to reduce penalties for voting illegally. Paxton is one of Trump’s biggest allies in Texas, leading to speculation that the attempted impeachment is due, in part, to his connection to Trump.

The Texas GOP released a statement slamming Phelan for his attack on Paxton, while also calling the speaker out for consistently siding with Democrats and against his own party.

“Speaker Dade Phelan and his leadership team have appointed Democrats to high ranking leadership positions, attacked the Republican Party of Texas, battled our conservative Lieutenant Governor, and killed Governor Abbott’s top priorities,” Republican Party of Texas chairman Rinaldi wrote in the statement.

“The impeachment proceedings against the Attorney General are but the latest front in the Texas House’s war against Republicans to stop the conservative direction of our state,” Rinaldi added.

“This sham impeachment is the result of the Phelan leadership team empowering Democrats, allowing them to hold leadership positions and letting them control the agenda,” the statement continued.

“It is based on allegations already litigated by voters, led by a liberal Speaker trying to undermine his conservative adversaries, and investigated by lawyers connected to a Democrat on the House General Investigations Committee. The voters have supported General Paxton through three elections — and his popularity has only grown despite millions of dollars spent to try to defeat him. Now the Texas House is trying to overturn the election results. It seems Texas Republicans will have to rely yet again on the principled leadership of the Texas Senate to restore sanity and reason for our state,” the statement concluded.

During his tenure as attorney general, Paxton has been a major advocate for free speech — taking several actions against Big Tech censorship. He also recently launched an inquiry into Big Pharma companies for alleged misrepresentation of the safety and efficacy of their COVID vaccines.
