The Fulton County, Georgia, prosecutor behind election-interference charges against former President Donald Trump and numerous co-defendants is now at the center of a scandal that could lead to her disqualification.

According to former Trump campaign staffer Michael Roman, who is one of the former president’s co-defendants, District Attorney Fani Willis maintained a “personal and romantic relationship” with special prosecutor Nathan Wade while both worked on the Trump case.

In a complaint filed earlier this week, Roman asserted that Willis and Wade “have been engaged in an improper, clandestine personal relationship during the pendency of this case” and Wade brought home $654,000 in income as a result.

At least a portion of that income, the complaint went on to allege, was used to fund the couple’s extravagant outings.

Roman’s court filing alleged that “the district attorney and special prosecutor have traveled personally together to such places as Napa Valley, Florida and the Caribbean and the special prosecutor has purchased tickets for both of them to travel on both the Norwegian and Royal Caribbean cruise lines.”

While the complaint acknowledged that some trips — to D.C. or New York City, for example — “might make sense for work purposes in light of other pending litigation,” it went on to ask what “work purpose” could be served by traveling to “traditional vacation destinations.”

Pallavi Bailey, a spokesperson for the district attorney, reacted to the accusations only by asserting that Willis will respond “through appropriate court filings.”

For his part, Trump weighed in on the development in a social media post calling for the entire case to be tossed out.

Writing in all caps, the former president declared: “All charges against me, and others, should be immediately dropped, with apologies, and monetary damages for the illegal and highly political persecution of innocent people.”

Following a court hearing in D.C. on Tuesday related to his claims of presidential immunity in connection with a different criminal case, Trump provided another statement.

“You had a very big event yesterday as you saw in Georgia where the district attorney is totally compromised,” he said. “The case has to be dropped. They went after 18 or 20 people. … She was out of her mind. Now it turns out that case is totally compromised.”
