Sometimes the truth comes from the strangest places. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) told his Democratic colleagues that engaging in border security talks is not “xenophobic,” as many extreme leftists claim.

His startling comments were publicized Thursday, just a day after Republicans torpedoed the administration’s $111 billion supplemental funding bill. The GOP demanded that attention to the border invasion go along with the massive outlay for foreign security interests.

Speaking to Politico, Fetterman referenced those who breathlessly insist that racism is at the root of all worries over border security. “I hope Democrats can understand that it isn’t xenophobic to be concerned about the border.”

The rookie senator called the dialogue “a reasonable conversation” that Democrats should not shy away from.

Last month federal officials reported a staggering total of illegal migrant encounters that reached almost 270,000. The seriousness of the figure is not lost on Fetterman, who called it “astonishing.”

He added, “And this isn’t a Fox News kind of statistic. This is the government’s. You essentially have Pittsburgh showing up there at the border.”

Senate Republicans derailed tens of billions of dollars in funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other allies on Wednesday over border security concerns. The GOP demanded that attention to the invasion that is taking place into this country come first.

The lead Republican in negotiations is Sen. James Lankford (R-OK). He rebuffed leftist criticism of the focus on the border, explaining that “we cannot work to secure other nations while our own border remains a massive national security risk.”

Fetterman’s stand on the border is another signal of his deviation from the hard line Democratic platform.

He recently came under fire for unwavering support for Israel in its war with Hamas. Fetterman brushed off radical leftist claims that the Israelis were committing war crimes in their retaliation for the Oct. 7 massacre.

The Pennsylvania senator reminded critics that Hamas brutally initiated the conflict. “They broke the first cease-fire, and then they attacked Israel and murdered over 1,200 innocent women, children, babies, everything.”

Clearly breaking ranks with many of his fellow Democrats, Fetterman declared his fundamental belief that Hamas must be destroyed. Only then will Israel be able “to achieve conditions that allow for peace to prosper.”

Truth indeed flows at times from the most unusual sources.
