The judges and commissioners of Frio, Karnes, La Salle and Medina counties in Texas have officially declared an invasion at the southern border. This declaration highlights the growing concern and impact of border-related issues in these regions, signaling the urgency for attention and action to address the situation.

In a collaborative effort led by newly elected Atascosa County Judge Weldon Cude, the judges of these counties have come together to form a coalition aimed at encouraging other counties to declare an invasion and stand up for the sovereignty of Texas.

This coalition signifies a unified front among 87 judges newly elected in November. Cude’s Atascosa County took proactive steps, before his election, by issuing a disaster declaration in 2021 and declaring an invasion in 2022.

In an exclusive interview with The Center Square, Cude expressed his confusion regarding the limited number of counties that had declared an invasion.

Cude said, “Why wouldn’t you declare an invasion? If you have people from all over the world coming into your county by bus, plane or smuggling people and drugs, why wouldn’t you declare an invasion? It’s important when you have millions coming across your southern border. What is it – if it isn’t an invasion?”

Before being elected as county judge, Cude served for six terms as a county commissioner, representing a predominantly Hispanic population in a rural area located south of San Antonio. The region Cude served is known for its predominantly Republican voting patterns.

During an orientation for judges held in February, Judge Cude had the opportunity to meet Judge John Paul Schuster, the newly elected Kinney County Judge, who communicated the crisis his county was grappling with.

Cude and Schuster took the initiative to engage with other judges, fostering a collaborative effort. As a result, four additional counties have now declared an invasion.

In a joint effort, they established a coalition with fellow judges in neighboring counties to advance a shared objective of prioritizing the safety, security and well-being of their respective residents. The coalition serves as a platform for mutual support and collaboration, with the overarching aim of employing all lawful measures to effectively address the ongoing crisis.

An invasion was declared by the judges and commissioners of Frio, Karnes, La Salle and Medina with the official signing of a new resolution.

Kinney County took the lead in initiating the movement to declare an invasion by issuing a disaster declaration on April 21, 2021. Subsequently, more than 50 counties have followed suit by issuing their own disaster declarations, referencing the border crisis as the underlying cause.
