Maine, California Study Removing Trump From Primary Ballots
The aftermath of the Colorado Supreme Court’s shocking decision to strip former President Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot continues. Now, California and Maine look to copycat the effort to disenfranchise their voters of the right to select the 2024 Republican frontrunner.
Colorado justices used “insurrection” as an excuse to purge Trump from the ballot.
And on Wednesday, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows was said to be exploring options to do the same. A state House hearing last week heard arguments from multiple attorneys attempting to justify erasing Trump from the upcoming primary.
The Maine complaint charged on Jan. 6, 2021, the 45th president “engaged in insurrection.” The leftist lawyers argued that, despite zero convictions or even charges, this means Trump is “now ineligible to hold any office, civil or military, under the United States.”
This blatantly ignored the fact that Trump told the demonstrators to let their voices be heard “peacefully and patriotically.”
Just like Colorado’s erroneous ruling, any decision reached by Bellows will almost certainly be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. With the primary season just weeks away, the process will likely be expedited for a quick conclusion.
And the petitions from leftists kept flying in.
Two claimed he should not be permitted to run for president due to “insurrection.” Rather standard fare so far.
But then a Portland law firm concocted an original. Citing the 22nd Amendment, the attorneys declared that Trump is disqualified because he believes he won the 2020 election.
In this manner he disqualified himself. Silly, but it makes about as much sense as claiming he engaged in insurrection.
The city’s mayor made his strident feelings known, and they are as predictable as the sunrise. “Nobody who commits insurrection against our government should be allowed to run for president. Our Constitution is clear.”
Ethan Strimling continued, “And so, I hope that the outcome of this is that [the] Secretary of State rules that his name should not be on the Maine ballot and will not be on the Maine ballot.”
Which begs the question, what is the left so afraid of? The democratic will of the people?
