Independent journalist Matt Taibbi, a longtime reporter for the Rolling Stone that was selected by Twitter CEO Elon Musk as one of the few “Twitter Files” journalists, appeared on Newsmax on Friday to discuss the downfall of the mainstream media.

During his appearance on Newsmax TV’s “The Record,” Taibbi argued that the lack of mainstream media coverage of the contents of former acting CIA Director Michael Morell’s testimony before Congress is an example of how the United States is “starting to come to” the “same situation” as in the Soviet Union — where “nobody read the newspapers because it was all lies and there was no real news in [them].”

The news, which Taibbi referred to as a “massive story of national consequence,” centers around Morell’s testimony that the Biden campaign — and specifically Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was serving as an adviser for the campaign at the time — was directly involved with organizing the infamous intel community letter that falsely discredited the Hunter Biden laptop story. Morell allegedly organized the letter signed by 50 former members of the intelligence community claiming that the New York Post’s bombshell report on the laptop had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.”

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Intel Committee Chairman Rep. Michael Turner (R-OH) revealed details of Morell’s testimony in a letter to Blinken.

The mainstream media desperately tried to avoid covering the shocking information discovered on Hunter Biden’s laptop — and are now trying to avoid reporting on Morell’s testimony, likely because the news reflects badly on their allies in government.

According to Taibbi, the media’s refusal to cover the story makes them just as bad as the propaganda-pushing media in the USSR.

“There [are] a couple of things about that that are remarkable: Number one, scan the pages of mainstream news coverage today, and you will not see anybody covering that story,” he said. “That’s the story about Michael Morell admitting his role in that, the former acting CIA Director. That’s a massive story of national consequence, and it’s just simply not in the news, much like the Twitter files reports were completely ignored.”

“So, what kind of country are we living in now?” Taibbi asked. “It’s — I went to school — I’m old enough to have gone to college in the Soviet Union and nobody read the newspapers because it was all lies and there was no real news in [them]. Well, we’re starting to come to that same situation in America.”

In the same interview, Taibbi also discussed a Democrat delegate from the U.S. Virgin Islands who threatened him with jail time over a typo in one of his tweets.
