Former President Donald Trump called for Republican unity following Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) failed attempt to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday. The House overwhelmingly rejected Greene’s motion to vacate, with a decisive 359-43 vote to table the measure.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Greene’s spirit and fighting spirit but stressed the importance of Republicans standing together against what he referred to as “the Radical Left Democrats.” He noted that with the Republican Party’s slim majority in the House, supporting a motion to vacate would be unwise at this juncture.

Citing the party’s strong performance in presidential polls, Trump warned that any display of disunity could be perceived as chaos and negatively impact their prospects in upcoming elections. He commended Johnson as “a good man” who is working hard and expressed regret that certain actions had not been taken sooner. However, Trump emphasized the need for collaboration to achieve their common objectives.

The vote to table Greene’s motion saw opposition from 11 Republicans and 32 Democrats, with seven members voting present. The overwhelming rejection of the motion highlights the importance of maintaining party unity and discipline, particularly given the challenges Republicans face with a narrow majority in the House.

As the Republican Party looks to capitalize on its momentum and secure victories in the 2024 elections, Trump’s call for unity and his endorsement of Johnson serve as a reminder that internal divisions and public displays of discord could undermine their efforts. By presenting a united front and focusing on their shared goals, Republicans hope to build on their strong polling numbers and appeal to a wide range of voters.

The failed attempt to remove Johnson and Trump’s subsequent response underscore the delicate balance that the Republican Party must maintain as it navigates the challenges of governing with a slim majority while simultaneously preparing for the upcoming elections. By heeding Trump’s call for unity and discipline, Republicans aim to project an image of strength and cohesion, even in the face of internal disagreements and challenges from their political opponents.
