Former New Jersey governor and failed presidential candidate Chris Christie is once again attacking former President Donald Trump, who he assisted during the 2016 presidential election after dropping out of the race.

The backstabbing began soon after Trump became president, with Christie appearing on left-wing mainstream media shows to attack his former ally.

For over a year now, the former governor has been one of the “go-to Republicans” for criticizing Trump and downplaying his chances in the 2024 presidential election.

Speaking with his fellow panelists on ABC’s “This Week,” Christie tried to attack the former president once again.

“I’ve said, over and over again, that he can’t win a general election,” he claimed.

“That’s not speculation,” Christie asserted. “That’s based upon the polling that I was privy to pre-the 2020 election, and what we saw actually happen in the 2020 election.”

The failed presidential candidate went on to claim that Trump’s polling has “only gotten worse since then” — citing losses from several high-profile candidates who were endorsed by Trump in the 2022 midterms.

In another appearance on “This Week” on Sunday, Christie was asked if he believes that Trump could beat President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.

“I don’t think so,” he responded.

Trump responded to “Sloppy” Chris Christie’s attacks in a post on Truth Social — citing his failed presidential run and his abysmal approval rating as governor of New Jersey.

“’Sloppy’ Chris Christie, the failed former Governor of New Jersey, spent almost his entire last year in office campaigning in New Hampshire for the Republican Nomination for President,” the post read.
“Much like his term in office, where he left with an Approval Rating of just 9%, his Presidential campaign was a complete disaster. He endorsed me the following day, later recommended Chris Wray for the FBI (how did that work out?), went down in flames, and then was SALVAGED by ABC FAKE NEWS. I never wanted him!”

Christie responded to Trump’s criticism in a tweet, desperately trying to claim that he was very essential to Trump’s 2016 victory while actually emulating the former president himself.

“I’m the target of Donald Trump’s new tantrum,” he claimed. “None of his lies about me today bothered him when he asked me to prep him for every general election debate or offered me 3 different cabinet posts. He’s the only man to lose to Biden outside Delaware. That loss to Joe still stings.”

For better or worse, a major part of Trump’s personality involves dropping so-called “allies” after they are no longer useful to him — mostly because of their backstabbing actions or their refusal to endorse America-First policies while allying with the establishment. Christie, who criticizes Trump for these actions, did the exact same thing — and essentially admitted it in the tweet.

He allied with Trump during the 2016 election and after, but quickly pivoted to get praise from the left and the establishment — dumping Trump and attacking him in the process. Like many so-called “Never Trumpers,” he flips whichever way the wind is blowing, especially if it benefits him and his potential 2024 presidential run.
