A prominent Democrat congressman is facing backlash after calling for former President Donald Trump to be “eliminated” moments after condemning the use of “dangerous” rhetoric.

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), who served as lead counsel against Trump in his first impeachment and has been President Joe Biden’s most ardent defender in his impeachment inquiry, made the comments during a Sunday appearance on former White House press secretary Jen Psaki’s MSNBC show while discussing Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

While warning about Trump’s comments regarding the January 6 Capitol protests and his legal cases, Goldman claimed that the GOP presidential frontrunner’s “rhetoric is really getting dangerous.”

“It is just unquestionable at this point that that man cannot see public office again. He is not only unfit. He is destructive to our democracy,” the Democrat congressman said, referring to Trump.

“And he has to be eliminated,” Goldman added.

Despite the clearly threatening nature of Goldman’s comment, a clip of the exchange was promoted by the official account for Psaki’s show “Inside with Jen Psaki” on X, formerly known as Twitter — sparking a wave of backlash.

Roger Stone, a longtime GOP operative and Trump ally, argued that Goldman’s comments were “dangerous, inflammatory, and most probably illegal.”

“They always accuse us of exactly what they are doing,” he added.

“In the least, Goldman should be investigated by the Secret Service for this threat,” argued Tom Fitton, president of conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch.

“By using his own ‘logic,’ Goldman should never see public office again,” wrote Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics.

“Time to Censure Dan Goldman for inciting violence against a President of the United States,” wrote Rogan O’Handley, lawyer and owner of popular X account “DC Draino.”

Goldman has since apologized in a statement published to X on Monday.

“Yesterday on TV, I mistakenly used the wrong word to express the importance for America that Donald Trump doesn’t become President again,” he wrote. “While he must be defeated, I certainly wish no harm to him and do not condone political violence. I apologize for the poor choice of words.”
