Republican lawmakers are expressing their outrage on social media after former President Donald Trump announced that he is a target in the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) probe into the January 6 Capitol protests.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that he had been informed that he must appear before a grand jury in four days — noting that his appearance likely means he will be indicted by “deranged” Special Counsel Jack Smith.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter, (again it was Sunday night) stating I am the TARGET of the January 6 Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always mean an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote.

“This has been a never ending fight since the day I came down the escalator in Trump Tower,” he continued.

“Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before, or even close…THIS WITCH HUNT IS ALL ABOUT ELECTION INTERFERENCE AND A COMPLETE AND TOTAL POLITICAL WEAPONIZATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT! It is a very sad and dark period for our Nation!” Trump added.

Within minutes of the Truth Social post, the halls of Congress were buzzing with the news — and Republican lawmakers were not happy.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) spoke with reporters about the news, calling it “absolute bulls—t” and arguing that political persecution in the justice system is “the only way the Democrats have to beat President Trump.”

In a statement posted to Twitter, GOP House Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) argued that the potential indictment was “unprecedented” and part of a “corrupt witch hunt.”

“Joe Biden’s Department of Justice continues to target his leading political opponents for the White House,” the statement read, in part.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) shared Trump’s official statement about the news in a tweet, where he also compared the attacks on the former president to the lack of blame for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) when his rhetoric prompted the congressional baseball shooting that left six people injured, including Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA).

“If President Trump is going to be indicted for his speeches before January 6th, then when is Senator @BernieSanders going to be indicted for his speeches that led to the attempted murder of Steve Scalise and other Republicans?” he wrote.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) also responded to the news on Twitter, referring to the special counsel as President Joe Biden’s “attack dog.”

“Jack Smith, Biden’s attack dog is at it again. What part of these tweets are confusing? Never in American history have we seen the Weaponization of the fed like this to interfere in an election. President Trump will be the nominee,” he wrote, sharing screenshots of two of Trump’s tweets that directly contradict the left’s claims that he instigated violence on January 6, 2021.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) also spoke to the press about the DOJ’s probe, suggesting that the Biden administration is purposely going after Trump because the former president is doing well in his campaign to unseat Biden.

“President Trump just increased his lead in the polls. So what does the Biden Administration do next? Weaponize government to go after President Biden’s number one opponent. This is not equal justice. It’s wrong, and the American public is tired of it,” McCarthy wrote in a tweet, sharing a video of his remarks to the media.
