On Friday, the Republican-controlled House passed a formidable $886 billion defense budget bill in a bold and assertive move. The bill garnered significant attention not just for its enormous funding allocation but for the conservative amendments attached to it, which now promise serious challenges for upcoming Senate negotiations.

The House GOP’s effort faced fierce criticism from the Democrat side. In an impassioned statement, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) labeled the GOP’s bold steps “a hate-filled vessel for right-wing MAGA extremism.” According to Jeffries, the bill undermines military readiness and national security. However, it is clear from the conservative camp that they see it not as undermining but as fortifying American values within the military.

A particularly noteworthy aspect of the House defense bill is the amendments that prohibit the Secretary of Defense from using department funds to cover expenses related to abortion services or transgender surgeries for service members. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) lauded the bill’s passage and its amendments, asserting that it puts an “end to wokism” in the U.S. military. He shared his sentiments on Twitter, “We don’t want Disneyland to train our military. House Republicans just passed a bill that ENDS the wokism in the military.”

Moreover, the approved bill marks a considerable rejection of “indoctrination attempts” in the Pentagon, as House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) voiced. His statement is clear: “Our military should be focused on protecting America – not pushing the Left’s woke ideology.”

The bill isn’t merely about ideological stands; it comes with significant benefits for the military. It provides about $26 billion more than Congress spent on the agency’s budget last year and offers the troops their most significant pay raise in decades. It also sends a clear message of American power against rising threats from China and Russia.

A clash of perspectives is expected in the Senate, controlled by the Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) already announced the possibility of “hundreds of amendments” to be filed on the Senate’s version of the bill. An interesting amendment already under consideration involves declassifying federal government records related to “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena and UFOs.”

The conservatives’ vision embodied in this defense bill underpins a steadfast determination to safeguard American values within the military while reinforcing its capabilities. Undoubtedly, this legislation will face tough negotiations in the Senate. Still, it underscores the importance of maintaining the nation’s core principles in its military strategy.
