Leftists Disavow Adams Over Comments About NYC Migrant Crisis
Although he campaigned on a promise to uphold New York City’s “sanctuary” status for undocumented immigrants, Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has since had a change of heart on the issue.
Following the influx of tens of thousands of migrants over the past year and as the Biden administration’s border crisis continues unabated, Adams recently remarked that the issue “will destroy New York City.”
Instead of acknowledging that his stance on the issue has changed as a result of witnessing first-hand the results of his city’s policies, some fellow leftists instinctively concluded that he must have transformed into a far-right extremist overnight.
One such pundit who shared that opinion was Ja’han Jones in a piece published by MSNBC’s The ReidOut Blog.
He accused Adams of “parroting right-wing talking points and espousing conservative politics” by pointing out that New York City cannot continue to absorb a never-ending stream of migrants.
Jones went on to note that the reason Adams’ “rant is being applauded by conservatives” appears to be that conservatives “feel they’ve made him come around to their bigoted thinking.”
He referred to the mayor’s derisive new nickname — “Black Trump” — and claimed that “he lived up to the moniker” by delivering “an anti-immigrant diatribe that sounded as if it had been ripped from the former president’s social media feed.”
The mayor’s about-face also opened him up to accusations of hypocrisy from many on the right who have been warning about the impact of unchecked immigration for years.
A spokesperson for Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, whom Adams described as a “madman” for initiating a plan to relocate some of the state’s undocumented migrants elsewhere across the country, issued a statement describing the New York mayor as a “hypocrite” for now reversing his open-door policy.
“Mayor Adams was proud to tout his self-described sanctuary city status until Texas began busing migrants to New York City to provide relief to our overrun and overwhelmed border communities,” explained Abbott press secretary Andrew Mahaleris. “With millions of residents, New York is only dealing with a fraction of what our small border communities deal with on a day-to-day basis.”
