Independent film sensation “Sound of Freedom” topped Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concert production to become one of 2023’s top ten grossing releases in the domestic market.

The gripping movie exposed the evils of human trafficking, particularly involving children. Despite indefensible left-wing criticism, word of mouth triggered massive ticket sales to the tune of $184,177,725 in the U.S. alone.

Box Office Mojo reported the blockbuster edged out Swift’s film by roughly $5 million.

“Sound of Freedom” featured a stirring performance by actor Jim Vaviezel, who is best known for his portrayal of the messiah in “The Passion of the Christ.”

The film told the true story of federal agent Tim Ballard. He famously stepped down from his position to travel to South America and rescue a young girl trapped by the horrors of human trafficking.

While liberal commentators decried the clearly moralistic and faith-based underpinnings of the movie, audiences flocked to see it. “Sound of Freedom” was easily the sleeper hit of the summer of 2023, outperforming franchises including “Indiana Jones” and “Mission Impossible.”

The flick opened at number one in the box office on the Fourth of July and held onto that position for three more weeks. This stunned industry experts as leftist critics panned the movie for its powerful messaging.

Audiences love it, however, and “Sound of Freedom” earned a sparkling A+ CinemaScore mark from ticket buyers.

It also bucked a well-established trend among summer blockbusters. Big name movies are expected to rake in huge dollars when they open and progressively decline from there.

But “Sound of Freedom” reversed this trend and became the only major summer release in history to increase more than 35% from its first to second weekend.

Interviewed by Fox and Friends, producer Eduardo Verastegui said eight years of his life were consumed by the film. His original deal with Fox fell through when Disney bought the company.

Disney executives told him, “This material doesn’t resonate with us.” It resonated with Angel Studios, and the rest is history.

“Barbie” topped the 2023 domestic box office chart with a gross of $636 million. It was followed by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($574 million), “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($381 million), “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($358 million) and “Oppenheimer” ($326 million).
