White House War With NYC Over Migrant Crisis Escalates
The conflict between New York City and the Biden White House intensified this week as Mayor Eric Adams and the administration continue to trade barbs. Adams told anyone in shouting distance for weeks that Washington needed to bail his city out from its illegal migrant crisis.
A leaked report on Wednesday took city officials to task for their lack of managing the flow of migrants.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “assessment team” found that Adams’s response to the influx has been woefully inadequate. NYC is a self-proclaimed “sanctuary” city with a “right to shelter law.”
This mandates officials provide shelter to those who ask for it. Now these policies are being tested to the maximum.
A senior DHS official told NBC News that the city has “no exit strategy” and that its response is not “operationally sound.” On Monday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas revealed his team produced “significant recommendations.”
These, he claimed, will be implemented “in close partnership with the city.”
With 110,000 new arrivals, the nation’s largest city saw its capacity to accommodate the migrants overrun. Homeless shelters are hopelessly packed, hotels are full and temporary tent cities are popping up in outraged neighborhoods.
City Hall spokeswoman Kayla Mamelak called the word from Washington “a slap in the face.” She parroted Adams’ narrative of the federal government being responsible for the crisis NYC is facing.
There is so much blame to go around that it’s tough to know where to begin.
New York City laid a trap for itself when it declared “sanctuary” for one and all. Legal or not, legitimate asylum seeker or not, the city rolled out the red carpet and promised housing and services for everyone.
It quickly learned that “all” means a lot more than it ever dreamed would show up on its doorstep.
But then there’s Washington. From day one of his administration, President Joe Biden threw open the southern border and declared war on any policy or program that effectively kept migrants on the Mexican side.
Feds are quick to note that immigration falls under Washington’s responsibilities when state and local governments attempt to control the border. But they absolutely refuse to take responsibility for millions of unvetted people swamping the U.S. with no end in sight.
Adams and Biden have both themselves and each other to blame.
