Cruz Implicates Garland In Obstruction For Blocking Biden Investigation
While the Biden family has long faced allegations of corruption, the latest claims from an IRS whistleblower have upped the ante for the president’s critics in Congress.
A WhatsApp message reportedly sent by Hunter Biden to a Chinese political official in 2017 while his father was in the room appears to destroy President Joe Biden’s repeated claims that he had no involvement in his son’s shady foreign business deals.
In response to this new evidence, a growing number of GOP lawmakers are starting to suggest that impeachment should be on the table for the president.
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) established a leading voice in the movement this week, asserting that the WhatsApp message “is direct evidence of Joe Biden abusing his government power to enrich his son, and, assuming 10% for the big guy, to enrich himself.”
He cited a portion of the message that declares “we want to know” as a clear indicator that Hunter Biden was not acting alone. Further complicating matters are reports that Attorney General Merrick Garland stood in the way of a possible investigation into the allegations.
Although Cruz acknowledged that the younger Biden could have been lying about his proximity to his father at the time he sent the message, he said that is precisely why a thorough investigation is warranted.
“It’s possible Joe Biden was not going to inflict official damage on the Chinese if they didn’t pay him and his son millions of dollars,” the Texas Republican added. “That’s possible, but you know what, we don’t know if it’s true or not. Why? Because, according to the whistleblower, they didn’t investigate, and they were prohibited from investigating. They were prevented from even asking the question.”
Turning his attention to the Justice Department, Cruz added: “This, on the face of it, is obstruction of justice. And if Merrick Garland issued that order, he is the one blocking the investigation, and I think there’s real evidence of Merrick Garland being guilty of obstruction of justice.”
It seems clear from White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s refusal to answer relevant questions about the scandal that the Biden administration is unsure about how to address the latest corruption claims.
In a particularly bitter reply to one New York Post reporter, she shot back: “It’s not up to you how I answer the question. I just answered the question by telling you my colleagues at the White House Counsel have dealt with this, and I would refer you to them.”
