A shocking revelation made headlines across New Hampshire and the nation this week as biological male Stacie Laughton, the state’s first elected transgender representative, found himself again in the grip of the law. Laughton, who has an extensive criminal past, was arrested on charges of distributing pornographic images of children.

The 39-year-old former Democratic state representative’s arrest came on Thursday following a police response to a juvenile matter. John Cinelli, a spokesman for the Nashua Police Department, stated, “They spoke with reporting parties that indicated Laughton distributed explicit images of children.” Following these allegations, detectives from the Special Investigations Division were assigned to further the case, leading to Laughton’s arrest.

This isn’t Laughton’s first encounter with the law, nor his first resignation from office under a cloud of controversy. In 2012, he stepped down before even taking the oath after his previous criminal record came to light. Back then, he was convicted under his legal name before he transitioned, which resulted in the initial obscurity of his criminal history during the election process.

Laughton’s prior criminal charges include a stint of four and a half months in jail in 2008 for conspiracy to commit credit card fraud. He was also accused of tire slashing and falsely claiming an illness to acquire an ambulance ride.

In 2015, he faced felony charges for making a bomb threat against the Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, an incident that Laughton attributed to a “mental health issue.” And even with this sordid past, he returned to the political scene in 2019 after paying restitution for his 2008 fraud charge.

Unfortunately, his resumption of political activities didn’t indicate any marked change in his aberrant and criminal behavior. In 2021, Laughton was arrested on seven penalty counts for false information and was accused of misusing the state’s 911 texting system.

Despite these red flags, Laughton managed to get reelected in November 2022, only to resign again following his arrest on stalking charges.

This series of arrests raises serious questions about the integrity of the political process and how voters and the Democratic party were aware of Laughton’s past. The voters of Nashua deserved transparency regarding their candidate’s history, particularly in light of the gravity of the charges he’s faced.

The newest charges against Laughton are the most heinous yet. Distributing explicit images of children is an unthinkable act. It’s a crime that strikes at the heart of our society, violating the fundamental human rights of the most vulnerable among us.
